New Release 55

Sounds so good to me…

New Release

Last week: In a not-so-surprising turn of events, the giant ice pop melted and caused moderate amounts of chaos in Union Square.

This week: (brought to you by talking too much): Afterhours, Music in Mickey-Dee’s, and Downtown 81

This is called Vegetable

Tuesday, June 28

A Summer Wasting b/w Spaceship Earth, I Think I Love You
at the Reed Space (151 Orchard b/w Stanton and Rivington)
9p
free
www.thereedspace.com for more info and directions
mrreed@stapledesign.com to RSVP, and you gotta RSVP to go

This is an opening of a show by Cody Hudson, a Chicago artist who goes under the alias Struggle Inc. You’ve probably seen the work he’s one on the cover of some Chocolate Industries records or in the pages of RE:UP magazine. It’s a sleek mix of street art and graphic design.

note. If you can’t make it to the show tonight, you can check it out through July 31st.

Wednesday, June 29

Stop Making Sense
In the northwest corner of Washington Square Park
8.30p
free
www.washingtonsquareparkcouncil.org for more info and directions

Chances are you don’t have tickets to see David Byrne in Central Park, so you can use this as a nice substitute. The Washington Square Park Council is screening Jonathan Demme’s 1984 film that’s like no other concert movie ever made.

and…

A Dr. Katz Reading
at Happy Ending (302 Broome St b/w Eldridge and Forsythe)
8p
free
www.amandastern.com/happyending.html for more info and directions

This makes me so happy. One of my favorite shows growing up was Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Full of dry, quiet humor and featuring really good comics (who were up-and-coming at the time but have now made names for themselves), tonight’s show will feature the two main characters, Jonathan Katz and Jon Benjamin in non-computer-animated format. Todd Barry will hopefully be one of Dr. Katz’s patients.

note. Doors open at 7.30, and the room will probably fill up really quickly, so you should get there early.

Thursday, June 30

Inverse Cinematics, Chicus, SeanB, Zilyinas, and Dither Down
at Mannahatta (316 Bowery at Bleecker)
10p
free
www.redbudrecords.com for more info and directions

Redbud’s records are always good, and now they’re releasing one with a remix by Inverse Cinematics, a duo of twenty-year-olds that are on the Pulver Record label out of Germany. To celebrate, they’ve got one of the Inverse Cinematics tykes over here to do his first stateside DJ set. He’s alongside two of the Redbud DJs as well as two other DJs I’ve never heard of. And there’s free booze for the first hour of the party.

and…

There’s a capture the flag game happening in some Brooklyn neighborhood tonight. Details aren’t up yet, but go to the website as time draws near: www.newmindspacce.com. This has been going on for the past two weeks, and it’s apparently been a blast. It’s put on by the same folks that did the big hide and seek game in DUMBO that I wrote about two or three weeks ago.

Friday, July 1

An afterhours party with some great DJs
65 Pearl St in DUMBO
4a until whenever
$3
maps.google.com to figure out how to get there

This looks great… like New York in the old days that I know nothing about. Some serious DJs are doing a late night party: Adultnapper (aka Francis Harris), Bill Patrick, Spinoza, Derek Plaslaiko, and probably some other folks that have been spinning at subtonic that evening.

Saturday, July 2

Downtown 81
at the BAM Rose Cinemas (30 Lafayette b/w St Felix and Ashland)
9.15p
$10
www.bam.org for more info and directions

Downtown 81 is the movie Jean Michel Basquiat starred in when he was 19 years old. That’s before he had his first show, when he was still completely struggling to survive. That makes it even more poignant that he’s playing himself as a homeless artist wandering around the east village trying to sell a painting. It captures the spirit of New York in the early eighties… when most of us were playing soccer in small towns or being born. It’s got some nice cameos from some great New York bands from the day like Kid Creole and the Coconuts and James White and the Blacks. Although all your hipster brethren probably own this one on DVD, it’s rare to see it on a big screen, so take advantage.

Sunday, July 3

Andrew Shapiro
at McDonald’s (160 Broadway b/w Maiden Lane and Liberty)
12noon to 4p
free (and you must absolutely not buy anything)
www.andrewshapiro.com for more info

Okay, so I’m sorry McDonald’s is here, but in a way, what Andrew’s doing is kind of subversive, so you can go ahead and excuse him for playing there and me for writing about it.

Andrew Shapiro composes mostly ambient music with a nod to the attention-grabbing repetition of Phillip Glass. As I sat in the McDonald’s listening to him a couple Sundays ago (It’s a regular gig), the whole experience turned surreal. Watching the tourists who’ve just come from Ground Zero come eat their nuggets, while he overtakes the atmosphere with his music, is strangely calming. You really have to go and sit there for fifteen minutes to understand. It’s totally worth getting that close to the devil.

Monday, July 4

As if you were really expecting me to write on time anyway, I’m giving you fair warning that I’m taking the day off. So here’s the listing a week in advance:

There’s a hotdog-eating contest at Coney Island and about a million rooftop parties today, and you should go to them.

And as always, if you're wondering how you're getting this email about all the great things that happen in New York, it's because I know you or one of your friends, and I stole/was given/borrowed your email address. I'm hoping that you're happy about this. If not, just email me at remove@newreleasenewyork.net with the subject ‘Naughty Housewives Want To Let You See It All,’ and I'll remove you with only moderately hard feelings.

Also, if you want me to list something that you're doing or just something that you think is worth telling other folks about, simply send an email to events@newreleasenewyork.net by 4p on the Sunday before it happens. It helps if you send along as much info as possible in that email. Like if you’ve got a band, send me a link to your website that has mp3s on it, or if you’re an artist, send me a picture. I do my best to disseminate all information.
