This is an opening of a show by Cody Hudson, a Chicago artist who goes under the alias Struggle Inc. You’ve probably seen the work he’s one on the cover of some Chocolate Industries records or in the pages of RE:UP magazine. It’s a sleek mix of street art and graphic design.

This makes me so happy. One of my favorite shows growing up was Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Full of dry, quiet humor and featuring really good comics (who were up-and-coming at the time but have now made names for themselves), tonight’s show will feature the two main characters, Jonathan Katz and Jon Benjamin in non-computer-animated format. Todd Barry will hopefully be one of Dr. Katz’s patients.
note. Doors open at 7.30, and the room will probably fill up really quickly, so you should get there early.

Redbud’s records are always good, and now they’re releasing one with a remix by Inverse Cinematics, a duo of twenty-year-olds that are on the Pulver Record label out of Germany. To celebrate, they’ve got one of the Inverse Cinematics tykes over here to do his first stateside DJ set. He’s alongside two of the Redbud DJs as well as two other DJs I’ve never heard of. And there’s free booze for the first hour of the party.

There’s a capture the flag game happening in some Brooklyn neighborhood tonight. Details aren’t up yet, but go to the website as time draws near: www.newmindspacce.com. This has been going on for the past two weeks, and it’s apparently been a blast. It’s put on by the same folks that did the big hide and seek game in DUMBO that I wrote about two or three weeks ago.

Downtown 81 is the movie Jean Michel Basquiat starred in when he was 19 years old. That’s before he had his first show, when he was still completely struggling to survive. That makes it even more poignant that he’s playing himself as a homeless artist wandering around the east village trying to sell a painting. It captures the spirit of New York in the early eighties… when most of us were playing soccer in small towns or being born. It’s got some nice cameos from some great New York bands from the day like Kid Creole and the Coconuts and James White and the Blacks. Although all your hipster brethren probably own this one on DVD, it’s rare to see it on a big screen, so take advantage.

Okay, so I’m sorry McDonald’s is here, but in a way, what Andrew’s doing is kind of subversive, so you can go ahead and excuse him for playing there and me for writing about it.
Andrew Shapiro composes mostly ambient music with a nod to the attention-grabbing repetition of Phillip Glass. As I sat in the McDonald’s listening to him a couple Sundays ago (It’s a regular gig), the whole experience turned surreal. Watching the tourists who’ve just come from Ground Zero come eat their nuggets, while he overtakes the atmosphere with his music, is strangely calming. You really have to go and sit there for fifteen minutes to understand. It’s totally worth getting that close to the devil.

There’s a hotdog-eating contest at Coney Island and about a million rooftop parties today, and you should go to them.
